National Alliance of School Premises Management
Frequently Asked Questions

About NASPM

What is NASPM?

NASPM — the National Alliance of School Premises Management — is the professional body for school premises, estates, health and safety and compliance in the UK. We support schools with practical guidance, trusted training and a strong national community, helping schools reduce risk, meet their statutory duties and evidence what they are doing with clarity and confidence.

What does NASPM stand for?

NASPM stands for the National Alliance of School Premises Management.

Why does NASPM exist?

School premises management and health and safety sit at the centre of school accountability, yet many schools rely on overstretched individuals, fragmented information and outdated processes. NASPM exists to change that — providing the guidance, training and community that schools need to move from uncertainty to confidence, and from reactive compliance to genuine, evidenced control.

Who does NASPM support?

NASPM supports anyone with responsibility for school premises, safety and compliance, including:

  • Premises managers and premises officers
  • Headteachers and senior leaders
  • School business managers (SBMs)
  • Governors and trustees
  • Multi-academy trust (MAT) leadership and estates teams
  • Early years and EYFS settings
Is NASPM only for maintained schools?

No. NASPM supports all types of state-funded schools and education settings across the UK, including maintained schools, academies, free schools, multi-academy trusts and independent schools. Our training and resources are designed to be relevant across all education estates.

What is the 'Schools Must Be Safe' campaign?

Schools Must Be Safe is a national campaign led by NASPM to raise the profile of school safety and place it where it belongs — as a strategic priority for leadership, governance and the wider education system. The campaign stands for safety being treated as fundamental rather than optional, premises professionals being recognised and supported, and schools having access to clear, credible guidance. It is about raising the standard, not raising anxiety. Follow updates on NASPM’s LinkedIn page.

Leadership and the NASPM Team

Who runs NASPM?

NASPM is led by highly experienced education and school health and safety professionals. The team brings deep, practical knowledge gained from working directly with schools, local authorities, academy trusts and education estates, ensuring that all guidance, resources and training are grounded in the realities of school environments.

Where is NASPM based?

NASPM’s head office is located at:  Old Town Hall 29 Broadway Stratford London E15 4BQ

Is NASPM an independent organisation?

Yes. NASPM is an independent professional body. We are not a government agency or a commercial contractor — we exist specifically to represent and support the professionals responsible for school environments across the UK.

Does NASPM hold any quality accreditations?

Yes. NASPM holds ISO accreditation, reflecting our commitment to quality and professional standards. Our training programme is also accredited by the CPD Group, meaning all NASPM courses carry recognised Continuing Professional Development certification.

Ofsted and Inspection Readiness

How does NASPM help schools prepare for Ofsted inspections?

NASPM helps schools build and evidence the systems, processes and documentation that inspectors expect to see. This includes tools to support audits, resources to demonstrate statutory compliance, and guidance on understanding your responsibilities under the Education Inspection Framework. Schools that can clearly evidence their approach to safety and compliance are better placed to face inspections with confidence.

Has Ofsted's inspection framework changed recently?

Yes. Ofsted published a new Education Inspection Framework (EIF) in September 2025, which applies to all school inspections going forward. NASPM has published guidance on what this means for school premises management. See the Latest News section of the website for details.

What does NASPM say about evidencing compliance?

NASPM’s position is that schools should not only be managing risk, but be able to demonstrate clearly how that risk is managed. This means having documented decisions, risk assessments, policies, inspection records and audit trails in place. NASPM’s resources and tools are designed specifically to help schools build this evidence base.
